“Midwifery Now & Then”: Tour of The Midwife Group & Birth Center and The Penn Center: Saturday May 19th

On Saturday May 19th, we will leave the Westin hotel at 9am by coach bus and travel to The Midwife Group & Birth Center for a tour of the birth center.

The bus will leave the birth center at 11am and travel to St. Helena Island, SC. We will show the film All My Babies on the bus ride and discuss the film during lunch. Lunch will be catered by Momma Lou’s Gullah Cuisine at the Penn Center.

The afternoon will include a tour of the Penn Center. Tucked in the heart of the South Carolina Sea Islands surrounded by glimmering marshes and nestled beneath the silvery moss-draped limbs of massive live oaks, is Penn Center. It is the site of the former Penn School, one of the country’s first schools for formerly enslaved individuals. Midwifery was part of the curriculum at the Penn School and will be highlighted on the tour.

Penn Center is one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today. Located on St. Helena Island, one of the most beautiful and historically distinct of the South Carolina Sea Islands, and at the heart of Gullah culture.

The cost will be $60/person and will include transportation, lunch, and entrance to the Penn Center.
