About Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs)/Certified Midwives (CMs)

CNMs and CMs are advanced practice midwives who provide primary care with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic, newborn and reproductive health. While 95% of CNMs and CMs attend births in hospitals, CNMs/CMs attend births in birth centers and hospitals, home too.

CNMs and CMs:

  • Provide care, support, and advice during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, as well as care for newborns.
  • Perform a full range of primary care services as well as gynecologic care including family planning services, Pap tests, perimenopausal care, and breast cancer screenings.
  • Prescribe medications including controlled substances and contraceptive methods; admit, manage and discharge patients; order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests; and order the use of medical devices.
  • Provide health promotion and disease prevention services.
  • Focus on helping to make informed decisions, often creating bonds of trust and support that are increasingly rare in health care today.

The 2026 ACNM Annual Meeting & Exhibition will bring together the largest concentration of CNMs and CMs in the nation, along with other women’s health practitioners, allied health professionals, researchers, faculty, community leaders, policymakers, self-advocates, and midwifery students in support of common goals to advance sexual and reproductive health and the practice of midwifery.
